Abstract

Along the few past years, green practices have become at the very core of the one-going
discussion that concerns with sustainable development. “Green” as a concept has become an
embedded part of many terms that have been added to terminology over past years; green
architecture, green buildings, green urban, green city, green economy and last but not least
green business.
Meanwhile, Sustainability and sustainable development has become the focal interest for all
communities toward the realization of a better future through their national development
plans.
This research aims at highlighting the essential role that is played by science and technology
parks (STPs), either those are owned and operated by universities or by NGOs or simply by
the government. STPs provide the linkage between education and research from one hand,
and between research and development from the other hand. By this way, STPs first
contribution is giving the support to the national development plans by conducting green
growth within a smart environment.
The research turns attention on STPs as a must for the smart growth of GCC and Arab
countries to serve within their national development plan.
The research consists of three main parts; a background study of STPs conception and
contribution, followed by an analytical study of the design and management of some
examples of STPs worldwide then a study of the state of STPs in GCC.
The research suggests a practical plan for STPs in GCC to take place within their national
development.
