Sustainable energy production and ecosystem services in urban agro-forests planning

Abstract


Growth of urbanization generated a complex matrix where residential uses overlap with productive uses. It´s important to ensure rational use of natural resources by analyzing their productivity and identify trends in ecosystem services in urban areas. Finding data of urban environments and use is still difficult to obtain. The association of agricultural and forest species is called agroforestry, this practice can be made in smaller sized properties that exist in the cities. Urban agroforestry can sequester carbon, grow food and obtain energy all in one place, improving the quality of life in cities. This work will evaluate the possibility of reducing the emissions of C, achieve food and energy production in urban areas with agroforestry. C sequestration, crops productivity, electricity and heat at the municipal level for the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires were estimated. C sequestration was between 200 and 400 000 t per year. Heat energy was between 0.5 and 200 MJ. Electrical power was between 10 and 15 000 kW. This information was used for urban landscape planning by applying the concept of ecological networks. Agroforestry achieves the generation of jobs, food, bioenergy and the reduction of greenhouse gases, generating cleaner and sustainable cities in all dimensions.
