On eco-efficient technologies to minimize industrial water consumption

Abstract


Water is a key input for living, food producing, energyproduction, and many industries. Several countries are technically in asituation of water scarcity. Climate projections confirm that water scarcitywill further stress on available water systems and decrease the security ofwater in many areas. Water shortage is predicted to intensify significantly,mainly as a result of increase in population, pollution and evapotranspiration(as a result of global warming). Innovative methods to minimize industrialwater usage and waste production are of paramount importance in the process of extendingfresh water resources and happen to be the main life support systems in manyarid regions of the world. Further research and development is required tofacilitate commercial development of these knowledge based approaches. Therefore,initiating of any new project and idea in water related issues should targetingto minimize water consumption and waste production by developing creative processesfor enhancing water security. Softening is a primary unit in many industriesfor water conditioning. There are two most established methods for water softening:chemical softening using lime and/soda, and ion exchange using cationic resins.This paper demonstrates that there is a goodopportunities for many industries to save water and decrease waste water insoftening process by substituting traditional with echo-friendlymethods.
