Abstract


The planet earth is suffering from various arising environmental impacts resulting from human activities. Major environmental issues such as global warming, ozone depletion, pollution and loss of natural resources are global concerns induced by the developed environment. This has encouraged the implementation of the Green Building rating system concept into the construction industry and the development of the benchmark to assess building and construction performance. The existing building rating systems available today consist of various schemes which are used to assess and rate the building performance in their countries. Nevertheless, no specific rating systems are available in Nigeria. From the comparative analysis performed in this study, one can notice that each rating system is accommodated to suite the environment for which it was designed for. This is why a new specific rating system that suited and matched the needs of the construction industry and the environment in Nigeria has to be developed. Comparative analyses for five rating systems were undertaken after which the sustainable assessment criteria compared to the Nigerian local regulations, climate, topography, environmental priorities and socio- economy. The Analytic Hierarchy Process technique was used to support the solution of a decision problem by evaluating possible alternatives from various aspects. The result shows that participants gave the highest weight to sustainable site with 39% but this is understandable because everyone living in Nigerian cities suffers from the environmental degradation in its different forms.
