Abstract


The content of this paper discusses sunlight penetration on the front façade of two different architectural styles apartments in a tropical region. The front façade of two high-rise apartments in Penang, Malaysia were selected to compare performance of the sunlight penetration. The first case study is Halaman Kristal Apartment with vernacular architectural style’s façade design, whereas the second case study is the neo-minimalist style’s façade design of Bayswater Condominium, Malaysia. Ecotect software is used in the survey to calculate the extent of sunlight penetration on the apartment façades. The survey was conducted at a position when the sun path is perpendicular to the house façade with a series of Ecotect simulations in hourly time from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm. The research finds that the apartment façade with neo-minimalist architectural style have a very good shading performance and prevent the unnecessary direct sunlight from getting inside the room during most of the day time. The recessed wall with balcony and other shading elements are very effective in the neo-minimalist style to prevent the extent of sunlight penetration from getting inside the house except for the first and last hour of simulation because of lows angle of the sun position.
