Effectiveness of biofertilizer and organic fertilizer for sustainable production of chickpea in Cholistan-Bahawalpur

Abstract


Cholistan (Bahawalpur) is extremely dry and harsh desert with very little rainfall and water availability. Due to the shortage of cereal grains and water, it is need of the hour to arrange some alternate food sources in these areas that can be produced with limited water, to face the situation. Chickpea is can be grown on marginal lands with residual moisture. It can be successfully grown under water limited conditions and rain fed areas. Biofertilizer developed from novel strains of Rhizobium and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) has ability to improve growth and nodulation of chickpea and enables it to withstand the periods of drought. Present study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of biofertilizer for improving the productivity of chickpea in Cholistan. Six field trails were sown in different villages of Cholistan with different treatments using biofertilizer along with enriched compost and farmyard manure. The results showed that the individual and combination, application of biofertilizer, farmyard manure and enriched compost significantly enhanced the nodulation, growth, yield, grains quality and physiology of chickpea under desert conditions of Cholistan area. It was concluded from final results that the use of biofertilizer is highly effective in enhancement of economic profitability of chickpea crop. The results also revealed that the use of organic nutrient sources along with biofertilizers is also significantly effective. So, the farmers of Cholistan should adopt the biofertilizer technology along with organic manures and composts that will not only enhance the grain yield but also rejuvenate the soil health.
