Environmental Concern towards a Sustainable Waste Plastic Recycling

Abstract


Tremendous groth of plastic in the world brought about environmental concern from the last three decades. Most of the plastic either disposed of in a dumping sites or burned in the fields due to poor environmental management. In the present work, tertiary recycling option was used for the recycling of waste polystyrene. A series of metals (Mg, Zn, Al, Cu, Fe) impregnated catalysts over montmorillonite (Mmt) were synthesized and studied for the catalytic degradation of waste polystyrene. The catalysts were characterized using N2 adsorption/desorption and SEM techniques. The degradation reaction was carried out in a pyrex reactor to study the effect of temperature, reaction time and feed to catalyst ratio. It was found that 5% Al/Mmt and 20% Fe/Mmt were found almost the same. Using 5% Al/Mmt catalyst, the yield of products was 8.49 wt%, 5.13 wt%, 49.28 wt% and 2.80 wt% and using 20% Fe/Mmt catalyst, the yield of products was 10.15 wt%, 6.42 wt%, 50.93 wt% and 2.31 wt% for toluene, ethylbenzene, styrene and alpha-methylstyrene, respectively.
